What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a way of natural healing and had its origin in India about 5000 years ago. Ayurveda means the science of life as Ayur means life and Veda means science. Ayurveda contributes towards the wellness of health ie. body, mind and spirit. The primary purpose of Ayurveda is towards the promotion of good health and not towards the healing or fighting of diseases. Even the traditional medicines of Tibet and China have their roots in Ayurveda. Ayurveda believes that everyone is made up of 5 basic elements of the universe: air, space, water, fire, and Earth. Now, these 5 elements combine in the human body and that leads towards the formation of 3 life forces or energies which are called doshas. These doshas control the working of the human body. Hence let’s see what are these 3 doshas and their importance in the human body.

  1. Vata dosha- It is made up of air and space. This is believed as the most powerful dosha of all three. It controls all the basic functions of the body like the division of the cells, breathing, mind control, blood flow, the functioning of the heart, and also the excretion of waste through the intestines. This dosha is disrupted by some things and hence they are to be avoided. Things like eating soon after having a meal, fear, grief, or even staying up till late. And this is the dosha which can lead to some of the problems like heart disease, asthma, skin problems, etc.
  2. Pitta dosha- It is made of fire and water. And this is the dosha which controls the digestion and metabolism of the human body. By metabolism, we mean the breaking down of foods in the human body. And the appetite of the human body can be disrupted by several factors like eating too much spicy food or even by spending too much time in the sun. This is also the main life force. And this could lead to life diseases like heart disease, diseases related to blood pressure, infections, etc.
  3. Kapha dosha- It is made of water and earth. This is the life force which enables the muscle growth and provides strength to the body along with the weight and the immune system. And this dosha is disrupted by sleeping during the day, eating very sweet foods, and eating high amounts of salt in food items. And that could lead to serious diseases like cancer, diabetes, asthma, obesity, etc.

Each and every person in the world has a unique mixture of the three doshas. And in each person, a certain dosha is powerful than the others. And each dosha controls a different body function. And the chances of getting sick and suffering from any disease depends upon the doshas of the person.
