As the name suggests, yoga teacher training (YTT) is a standard training to become a yoga teacher. The basic training is 200 hours or 500 hours. The core curriculum of yoga teacher training is decided and regulated by the European union of yoga across Europe, by Yoga Alliance in America, by the British Wheel of Yoga in the United Kingdom and in Germany by the German yoga federation (BDY). The German Professional Association of Yoga BDY (Berufsverband der Yogalehrenden) governs the standards of yoga teacher training programs. As per the rules, a thorough, detailed and intensive training of 4 years duration is an absolute requirement. Yoga is a holistic and integrative approach and a way of life that necessitates profound knowledge, understanding and skills to teach and guide others. After completing 800 teaching units of face-to-face training in 4 years, the candidate has to clear the final examination for “Yoga Teacher BDY/EYU”.

  1. What are the BDY and EYU?

Berufsverband der Yogalehrenden (BDY) is German Professional Association of Yoga teachers. Since 1967, BDY is the main association of yoga teachers in Germany working for social recognition of yoga teachers, representing the social interests of yoga teachers and to maintain quality standards of yoga teaching in Germany. For the purpose, BDY has a defined core curriculum of two and four year teacher training. BDY is a certified by health insurance companies and a member of European Yoga Union (EYU).

After completion of 500 teaching units in first two years of yoga teacher training, German Yoga Federation (BDY) conducts an intermediate examination. The successful candidates are awarded with “Yoga Teacher basic BDY / EYU” certificate. This certificate is already acknowledged by the health insurance companies.

Yes. Anyone may claim themselves as yoga teacher. Therefore, to ensure quality standards of yoga teaching, proper training and certificate from recognized yoga school is important.

The practice is common in India and several yoga institutes have it in their core curriculum as well. However, it’s rather unfortunate that some institutes manipulate this concept of karma yoga so that customers work free of charge. Also, some institutes charge high fees for karma yoga training, which nullifies the whole concept of karma yoga.

  1. Are there also sects in yoga?

Yes. There are various sects (also called branches) of yoga. These include Hatha yoga, raja yoga, bhakti yoga, jnana yoga, karma yoga etc.

  1. Is the training certified by the Yoga Alliance?

  1. I already have yoga training, can I have it credited?

If you already have participated in yoga training and you want to count those hours into your 4 year yoga teacher training, it must be checked on a case-by-case basis. The German yoga association has a fixed curriculum of yoga teacher training. However, one can also join as a later entry (advanced yoga teacher). We suggest you to contact us and we will see if we can figure out some suitable solution.

  1. What if I get pregnant during my training?

It’s not a big deal and in fact it happens quite often. Usually, the participant skips training session for a year and then joins with next session. Sometimes, they continue for early days of pregnancy and prefer a break during early days of breastfeeding. It also depends on the participant’s health so we will find an individually suitable solution.

  1. What tools do I need to take part?

When joining the yoga classes, all you need is light sportswear such as yoga pants and shirt or something warmer depending on the season. We will provide you yoga mats and seat cushions. You may bring some extra sheet to cover the yoga mat if you want to.

  1. How important is the size of the individual course groups?

The group size varies depending on the course period. No matter what’s the size of group, our instructors ensure to engage and be attentive to every participant. 

  1. If an appointment is prevented, is it possible to make up for individual appointments?

Yes. This is possible in case of monthly payments that participant may have additional participation in other yoga courses. Moreover, those who sign up for a particular course can make up for missed appointments in other courses. However, it depends on availability of slots and within the duration of course.

  1. Are there physical or health reasons that preclude participation in the courses?

For those having some kind of serious health issue should consult their physician. If your doctor gives green signal then there is nothing that would be in the way. Still having doubts? Just call us and discuss the issue.

  1. Why should you practice yoga barefoot?

One should practice yoga barefoot. The reason is that it maintains body balance and stability of posture while practicing yoga asana. Being barefoot helps to channelize the earthly energy and positivity. It helps to build strong connection of mind, body and soul with earthly energies and also imparts a sense of relaxation. It multiplies the benefits of yoga practices when you practice barefoot.

  1. How should I clean my yoga mat?

Cleaning yoga mat is essential as it absorbs dirt, sweat and moisture. It smells bad and accumulates bacteria if not cleaned in time. 

The ideal way is to rinse it with a good detergent or soap. You can even use a few drops of dish wash soap. Do not use too much detergent or soap as it may leave residue and yoga mat will get slippery which is dangerous. Moreover, washing yoga mat in washing machine is debatable. It may ruin the texture or the material. So, better use some soap mixed in warm water and rinse with a brush.
